d r e a m drawing workshop
hARTslane Gallery
On the second day of the Pictures of Departure exhibition at hARTslane Gallery, a drawing workshop was held for Year 5 students from Haberdashers' Hatcham Primary School. The
session was designed to create a space for young artists to experiment, reflect on their responses to the exhibition and see their own work displayed within a gallery setting.
The workshop invited the children to explore themes of dreams, memory and experimentation. It began with a discussion about the exhibition, encouraging the students to consider what resonated with them, what didn’t and what piqued their curiosity. This dialogue provided a foundation for their own explorations in drawing, highlighting how mark-making can capture emotions, memories and new ideas. Using materials such as chalk, oil pastels and charcoal, the students were guided through an experimental approach to drawing that prioritised process over perfection. They experimented with colour, texture and the physicality of materials to create expressive, dreamlike works. The emphasis was on embracing mistakes, spontaneity and the unpredictable nature of creativity.
The workshop concluded with each student’s artwork displayed on the gallery walls, transforming the space into a vibrant celebration of collective creativity. This experience aimed to inspire and empower the young participants, showcasing art as a powerful tool for communication, exploration and self-expression.

For Camden Council’s Community Health Event celebrating Black health and well-being, a drop-in workshop invited children and adults to explore mindfulness and creativity through art and nature. Participants experimented with textures and drawing materials, creating rubbings with leaves, flowers, and textiles.
The session encouraged the use of natural materials and found objects, promoting a sustainable and accessible approach to art. It aimed to encourage participants to continue creating at home while reflecting on our connection to the natural world.
